Catherine will share her story, checkered with challenges, and provide insight on how to overcome obstacles and failures in leadership.
Defy Ventures is a NYC-based entrepreneurship, employment, and character training program that recognizes that many former drug dealers and gang leaders can become successful, legal entrepreneurs.
Defy “transforms the hustle” of formerly incarcerated Entrepreneurs-in-Training (EITs) by offering intensive leadership development, Shark Tank-style business plan competitions, executive mentoring, financial investment, and startup incubation.
Defy intentionally builds a life-giving, authentic community between EITs and its executive volunteers as they bond in their humanity.
Since its founding, Defy has raised $4 million and engaged 2,500+ executive volunteers who contributed 12,500 hours as business plan competition judges, mentors, and business coaches. Defy has incubated and financed 80 of its graduates’ companies. Grads have reported a 83% increase in income and achieved an 95% employment rate.
Defy has been showcased in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Richard Branson’s blog,Inc. Magazine, Forbes.com, and The Harvard Business Review.
