Risk management has always been a key component of a banker’s skills portfolio. However in the past 15 years this has moved from being an intangible soft skill to a formal requirement needed, not only by those working in the risk management departments, but also by all senior managers and heads of departments. Every person involved in banking, whatever their immediate responsibility, needs to demonstrate a good understanding of both the formal basics of risk management as well as the latest developments in the regulatory bodies and in academia. This wide skills basis is not only needed in day to day activities but needs to be formally demonstrated to regulators and auditors. Being proficient at one’s job is no longer enough. All managers, heads of departments, product developers, compliance officers, and board directors, including non-executive directors, need to understand the basics of risk management, to be able to read risk reports, to balance risk and reward in their area, and to articulate their own risk appetite. This programme will provide these necessary skills as well as giving a wide, general knowledge of the subject and the necessary grounding for those who intend to move on to specialise in risk management.
